Dressing for the mountain
On the slopes, or out on the mountain generally, the aim is to be warm, but not so warm that you overheat, sweat can dampen your clothes which will then turn cold, which will make it harder to stay warm or dry. The best way to maintain a balance is to dress in layers so that you can easily adjust your body’s temperature by removing layers if too hot, or adding layers if too cold.
Ski Clothing for Children
Children work in the same way, but in addition, make sure your child has a warm hat, waterproof ski gloves, a snowsuit (or failing that a jacket with a snow skirt, to stop snow from getting inside, and sallopettes), suitable socks, sunglasses and/or goggles (white snow and bright sunshine are a blinding combination!) and a helmet is highly recommended for children under 12.
In addition, you will more than likely need the following;
- Suncream
- First aid kit
- Adaptors for appliances
- Books and toys
- Easily layered clothes – vests, t-shirts, fleeces (easy to dry!) etc
- Snow boots
- Travel cot
- Backpack
- Bottles/formula for babies
- Sterilisation equipment for bottles
Preparing children for the snow each morning
Feed them! Make sure they’ve eaten a breakfast packed with carbohydrates. Staying warm and energetic requires plenty of fuel.
Layer up! Several thin layers are better than 2 or 3 thicker ones. Ensure that the final outer layer is dry and waterproof. Hats and gloves are a must for children and adults alike.
Protect them! Apply a high factor sun cream to start the day and keep re-applying throughout, especially on blue sky days, but don’t forget the cloudy ones too!
Stock up! If your child is heading out to ski school, pack up additional snacks and a drink to help keep their energy levels up and keep them hydrated.

They are also there to help you find emergency telephone numbers for organizations who can help your family in the event of an accident or incident.
